By Janine Yasovant
[WC News Service]
It is so interesting to talk about a Thai artist, Sa-ad Tanomwong, whose work I've followed for several years. He is an independent artist that I always admired and who I have wanted to write about -- his life and work. In December 2016, he agreed to be interviewed show me some of his works.

Sa-ad Tanomwong was born in Klaeng District, Rayong Province, Thailand. He graduated from Poh Chang academy of art. He began his artistic career as movie poster painter, taught art subjects at Santirad school and then worked for the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok.
After he resigned from the last job, in 1971, he eventually got a job at a USIS organization as an art illustrator and this was the beginning of his full-time artist life. When he was working for the USIS Thailand with another eight artists, he had an idea to create art that looked exciting and independent because he had inspiration from a foreign artist who drew powerful realistic paintings of wild horses.

Rocks,
Sea,
Sky
By Janine Yasovant
He says, 'My love of rocks, sea and sky began from the journey to Samet island, Rayong province, Thailand, when I was just a freshman of the faculty of painting, sculpture and graphic arts. Silpakorn University. Around forty years ago, the senior students took the first year students. I thought that was my love at first sight with scenery of the island. After that I went there several times on my own during the study at the university and after graduation. Another time I was at the area of Lung Wang bay for over a year. As usual, I painted rocks, sea, and sky. Later, I also traveled to some famous islands and Provinces in Thailand such as Samui island, Phuket Province, Similan island, Krabi Province and Trang Provinces. I think this is my deep love because I don’t want to change my way of painting from the nature of rocks, sea, and sky to something else.'

The 9th solo art exhibition of Sriwan Janehuttakarnkit was held last month and through this month at Wangna Theater, Bunditpatanasilpa Institute. After her retirement, she moved from Bangkok to near the Mekong River. On the day I visited Sriwan Janehuttakarnkit at her house near Golden Triangle, Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province, she told me that she had just finished murals at a temple at “Doi Sa Ngo” mountain and was preparing the 9th solo art exhibition. I also saw the art gallery she built to house some of her paintings, sculptures, and ceramics for the exhibition.

A native of the island Koh Yoh in the South of Thailand, Chayanan Arvato studied art at Chang Sin College and later got Bachelor’s and Master's degrees from Silpakorn University. His current job is a university lecturer. Chayanan is a role model of an artist who incorporates drawing in the western style. He has observed art works in Europe more than eight times and he found that his knowledge of art is still lacking as each kind of work requires different ways of training. People admired him and called him the best figurative artist in Thailand. I completely agree.

THE ART OF PAKITSILP VARAMISSARA

For some time, I have followed the Thai artist Prakitsilp Varamissara. He has had several interesting exhibitions which can be seen as blending artistic knowledge from Silpakorn University and local wisdom from the area where he has currently been residing. That is the combination of art in Lanna Thai culture and artistic knowledge from western nations.
