OCTOBER 15, 1969

October 15, 1969 was an important day – the first time in history that there was a nationwide strike at college campuses.

By Peter Frishauf

I was editor of the NYU student newspaper Washington Square Journal at the time, and we produced this special poster addition to support the strike.  Makes for interesting reading, even today.  Note the end of the Nixon segment at the bottom of the page, one of a few Easter Eggs we embedded. The graphic came from Revolutionary News Service on Broadway & 106 by Straus Park, a story onto itself. It was in a space  on the UWS now occupied by a laundromat, a few years after the Underground Cafe closed there, the name an homage to its heritage.

I have original issues of the poster issue as well as bound volumes of the newspaper for that entire year – a fascinating diary of the times. Happy to donate what I have, some of which is still in pretty good condition, although the ravages of acid paper are making its presence known.  If you wish to preserve or exhibit any of it, I am happy to make it available as a permanent donation.

In 2002, I donated a copy of this to the American War Museum in Hanoi.  They were delighted to have it and amazed that we were not all put in jail for publishing it snd other anti-war content.
