And the Winner Is....
Starring Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, Philomena is the tale of a woman of a certain age determined to find the infant she bore and gave up to adoption as a teenager, and the unemployed political journalist who agrees to assist her and to write her story. The beautifully filmed story unfolds in a convent in Ireland and in Washington.
What could easily descend to soap opera level easily moves apace with interest and surprises, kept lively by the skill and synergy of Dame Judy and Coogan. It is not a big movie nor does it have the beautiful or cool people. That it has garnered Academy nomination is testament to my view that is a very good movie and a breath of fresh air.
