John O'Hara Remembered
By Frank Wilson
Inquirer Book Editor
Author John O'Hara was born a century ago in Pottsville. His father was a physician, and
O'Hara's upbringing was comfortably middle-class. But Pottsville society in those days
- when coal was still king - was almost feudally structured. The wealthy Protestant iron
and coal barons lived in mansions higher and higher up along one side of Mahantongo Street.
The O'Haras lived more modestly, halfway up the other side.
