Exhibit of Living African-American
Artists Neglects One of the Best

The Pennyslvania Academy of the Fine Arts' current exhibit of the works on living African-American artists, a supplemental show to its retrospective of paintings by Henry Ossawa Tanner (****/5), a 19th-century African-American artists, fails to include any works by Noel G. Miles, arguably Philadelphia's finest living African-American artist. This, though Miles is also a PAFA faculty member.

Noel G. Miles is a native Philadelphian, who received his first art training at the Salvation Army Center at Broad Street and Fairmount Avenue when he was living in the Richard Allen Homes. He obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Arts (formerly Philadelphia College of Art) in 1962.

Mr. Miles studied with Albert Gold and W. Emerton Heitland and became a member of both the Philadelphia Watercolor Club and the American Watercolor Society while he was a student. Mr. Miles taught at Cabrini College and, in 1980, founded The Commercial Art School, a state-certified trade school.

He headed the visual communications department at the Art Institute of Philadelphia from 1980-1987, and served as an adjunct instructor at Temple University School of Journalism from 1991-1996. Mr. Miles is currently a member of the faculty of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Drexel University.

In addition to teaching, Mr. Miles served for many years as art director at KYW-Channel 3 and WPVI-Channel 6.

Mr. Miles is best known for his watercolor images of Philadelphia's historic landmarks, many of which may be seen here (below). In 2000, the Republican National Convention commissioned him to create the official poster of the Convention, held in Philadelphia, and to produce a collection of watercolor prints as a commemorative gift for conventioneers.

In celebration of the 100th birthday of Philadelphia's City Hall, Mr. Miles collaborated with the City to create The Splendors of Philadelphia's City Hall: An Artist's View, a complete history of the extraordinary structure that is Philadelphia's center of government. The volume is filled with more than 50 interior and exterior full-color images of City Hall, created by Mr. Miles, which express the combination of civic heritage, sincere ideals and lofty aspirations felt by the local citizenry and their elected leaders.

Mr. Miles has won the Philadelphia Watercolor Society's Dawson Prize and the Art Directors Club's Silver Medal. He is a full member of the American Watercolor Society, active with the Philadelphia Watercolor Society and the Art Directors Club of Philadelphia, and serves on the board of the Big Picture Alliance.

Who We Are

Peter Frisauf, a publishing consultant in the medical field, is Philadelphia Junto's New York-based photographer.

Andrew Hamilton is a ichthyologist, retired from service to the state of California. He is a Philadelphia Junto travel writer, who lives in northern California.

Daniele Thomas Easton, a former French honorary consul in Philadelphia, is the director of France-Philadelphie. She writes about French cultural activities.

David Houston used to live in Washington and Wilbraham, Massachusetts. He is a writer, photographer, and active Facebook blogger, and lives in Oakland, California.

David S. Traub is a practicing architect and free-lance writer. He often contributes to the Philadelphia Weekly Press, and lives in Centre City, Philadelphia.

Ronald T. Alonzo, Philadelphia Junto's wine and food critic, has dined in every European and South American country. He now lives in Florida, after stays in Michigan, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Louisiana.

Liliane Clever was born in France, but has lived in America most of her life. She is a Philadelphia Junto restaurant and cultural critic.

Justin T. Carreño is a rock climber and geographer who lives in Washington. He was born in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Richard Carreño is Editor of Philadelphia Junto.
