Curator Michael Taylor Showcases Chagall at PMA

By Richard Carreno
Junto Staff Writer Bio
Fresh from presenting the Philadelphia Museum of Art's Pablo Picasso show, the PMA's curator of modern art, Michael Taylor, is now at work another project. This time, showcasing Marc Chagall.

A smaller production number, titled 'Marc Chagall and his Circle,' the show is slated for Perelman Building and will run from March to July 2011.

The exhibition will feature about 35 paintings and sculptures by emigre artists in Paris, including, besides the Russian-born Chagall, Jacques Lipchitz, Amedeo Modigliani, Jules Pascin, and Chaim Soutine. This contextualizing of a featured artist's oeuvre, with works by other collatoral artists, is a hallmark of Mr. Taylor's curating.

'The evocative power of Paris as a symbol of culture, of freedom, and of modernity was enormous for artists the world over and accounts for the extraordinaory migration there during the first half of the 20th century,' the PMA said in e-mail press notes.

The musuem did not state whether the works in this show will be drawn solely from its permanent collection. But given its strength in these modern works, that likihood is not unexpected.

The Chagall show is coordinated with the Kimmel Center's 'April in Paris' programme.
